A form of contemporary theatrical dance employing a special technique for developing use of the entire body in movements expressive of abstract ideas. The 20th century has been marked by a renewal of ballet and by the rise of modern dance. Modern Dance has its roots in the late 19th century, fresh ideas, and the rejection of the traditions of ballet as sterile and irrelevant. They were searching for naturalism and expression.
